Vegan Electricity Supply? Ecotricity Offers Green Alternative

Imagine animal products lurking in electricity, a British power company highlights this fact and also decides to give consumers a choice by offering the world’s first vegan electricity. UK based Ecotricity, a renewable energy company professed that around half of the British homes were powered by electricity made from animal byproducts. And, announced that its electricity and gas would reportedly be certified vegan.

Ecotricity’s founder, Dale Vince, highlighted that companies kept consumers in the dark about their secret ingredient. He added that there was a need for clear labelling of energy sourcing so that people could make informed choices.

Furthermore, the company would be offering vegan energy in both wind and solar power. And, it is also developing sea power that would be produced by wave oscillation and marine currents. The electrical sources of Ecotricity do not contain any animal byproducts, and it also has registered with the Vegan Society to certify its green status.

It is quite common for power companies to derive electricity from animals via anaerobic digestion (AD), even though this is not widely disclosed. According to sources, in this process, facilities heat animal manure, which in turn produces methane gas that is used to create electricity.

Animal waste is considered as a clean, renewable energy source. Apart from frackers not needing to drill and extract natural gas, the manure turned to fuel removes carbon pollution and also reduces power companies’ dependence on fossil fuels like coal and oil.

Farmers can also use the liquid remains of the manure as fertilizer, after anaerobic digestion, and make chips for animal bedding from the leftovers. David Simakov, a chemical engineer stated that they were talking about producing the amount of renewable natural gas that was enough to heat thousands of homes from just a single large landfill site.

Meanwhile, the energy company has also launched a vegan electricity tariff that it has branded the world’s first.
